DEVELOPMENT  TEAM  WORK

Residents Consultation Training

A key area of our work is keeping in touch with things on the ground.  Our staff are in constant contact with residents, checking how things are for them, etc.  We are currently running a training programme in partnership with our support agency CAN which has been well received by residents. There is a solid group of fifteen women attending. One of the main recommendations is for the establishment of the Community Forum where residents will facilitate large community consultation meetings.

Festivals/Summer Projects

Over the last seven years we have co-ordinated the running of the Fatima Regeneration Festival and Summer Project. There are huge levels of participation from children and adults. Art/culture programming has heavily influenced the practice of these events. The capacity and delivery of quality programmes has really developed over the last number of years.

Fatima Environment Group

A key area of our work has been the development of a resident’s environment strategy that would create a sustainable/clean environment. Having local ownership to this strategy has been a key element of our work.  A group is now being established made up of residents and includes children in its work. This came about following an Easter environment week managed in partnership with Dublin City Council.

Voter Registration/Awareness Programme

Over the last number of years we have been promoting a participative democracy approach for local people, who traditionally wouldn’t be interested/motivated in exercising their democratic vote.  Workshops are held where people are given the opportunity to discuss and reflect on reasons you might vote in general/local elections.

Employment/Training initiative

As a project we carry out audits of local people’s employment/training needs/options. Trained residents go door to door talking to residents. Over the last two years we have secured jobs on the construction site and apprenticeships with Dublin City Council.  We are now preparing people for the new round of jobs that will emerge from phase two construction. We have lined up training for the coming year, including safe pass, construction skills, retails, sports and leisure, etc.

Resourcing/Supporting local services and new initiatives

We are involved in the co-ordinating and networking of community based projects that benefit families living in Fatima and the immediate areas.  There are up to twenty such initiatives that we are involved in resourcing, i.e. chairing, providing admin/finance support, HR support, running/co-ordinating events, including festivals, older people’s projects, intercultural work, etc.

Community Digital Project (open access IT project)

Through funding from the Women’s Equality Initiative, we employ two local women to provide open access to the IT facilities for local people including computers, internet access, email etc.  Two evening sessions are held weekly and are there is a very good take up by local residents.  We hope to develop this initiative with the Digital Hub.

Participation on Integrated Structures – Local/National

As a project we have engaged with other initiatives across the canal communities and have developed links with International groups who have given us insights into their work and have provided space for exchange programmes. This work is spread out among our staff and our volunteers.  The levels of involvement vary and are subject to our capacity and the strategic importance attached.
